We are now trying "methylphenidate".
As I mentioned in one of the last newsletters, we have a child in the family who probably has ADHD. Presumably - because a final diagnosis is still pending and we don't know at the moment whether there will be one. That's not so important. I normally write about quite personal things here, but I try to leave people from my environment out of it. In this case in particular, I think that's extremely important, because the main character in this story is actually a child.
Nevertheless, the diagnosis affects me too, of course. I don't want to go into all the things we've experienced and lived through here over the last few years, but it definitely hasn't been easy. And it's no one's fault, we've all done our best, but the only reason it's been so hard has to do with ADHD or whatever it is.
We got all kinds of help and I have to say that if we hadn't been so active and done so much research ourselves, who knows where we would be. The quote from above would probably not exist. No matter how committed you are, how much energy you sometimes invest, you always have to be lucky and find the right people who can help you. And that wasn't always the case with us.
As I said, I don't want to go into too much detail. The fact is that the daily routine of the adults in the family usually looked like this: we got the children ready in the morning, then went to work, then it was time for the children again and between 8 and 9 o'clock in the evening the “leisure” time began. Time with the children was often hard work. Satisfying everyone's needs so that no one misses out is an extremely difficult undertaking, especially with an ADHD child.
As we have three children and as parents we share everything quite equally, we tried to create space for each other, but that was often not easy. In the evenings, there were often crisis talks, organization for the next day and everything else that comes up in a family like this. People who read this and have children themselves know what I'm talking about. We often reached our limits. Or went beyond our limits.
And now there is medication for the child. Last week the above sentence came up. How often have we sat together as parents in the evening and said that if there was a pill for our child that would help, we would give it to them right now. And now there is. And that is an incredible help. In just 5 days, we have seen completely different sides and facets of our child.
And of course we had reservations about such medication, but here too, talks and research have helped incredibly and we are currently more than relieved that everything is going so well. And I could go on for ages about what is happening to the child and what it is capable of, but never mind.
The important thing right now is that we can take a deep breath. To get back to myself - there was an incredible amount of energy tied up, that I might be able to use now for other things again at some point. I don’t know how many therapy sessions in the last weeks I talked about that topic. And I still got my own problems. Haha. But, I have great hope. Of course, it's not all plain sailing now, but hopefully there will be more calm for everyone involved. Keep your fingers crossed.
Running
Interesting week running-wise. Tired run in the beginning of the week. Then another 20k, 1000 vertical-meter-run on Thursday.
And on Sunday I was really looking forward to a 33k-run, but it was horrible.
Two days later I’m again thinking about quitting UTMB race plans. Never experienced something like that before. This should’ve been so much easier.
You can find all updates on my training plan for UTMB Obernai here.
