A new Tuesday, a new newsletter. Welcome to "Never not [thinking about] running" - a weekly email newsletter about mental health and running. If you are new here, have a look at the archive to get an impression of the range of topics. I'm always happy to welcome new readers. I promise. I also look forward to your opinions on the topics discussed here. Feel free to contact me by e-mail or in the comments.
Okay. That's unusual. I'm lying in bed sick at the moment. I'm coughing my heart out and I'm not having a panic attack or a bad mood. Okay. I tend to exaggerate. I wouldn't have a panic attack because of a few sick days, but I would definitely be in a bad mood, especially with the goal of running 34 kilometers through the Vosges in May in the back of my mind and a training plan lying next to my bed.
So here I am and I'm secretly patting myself on the back for being such a clever fox that I've put together my own training plan this time and provided it with enough buffer zones. I'm almost disgustingly proud of myself and now I have to spread the word. Okay. I have to laugh, but I'm actually not stressing about it right now and that's a good feeling.
First 4 weeks were great!
The first block of training for May went absolutely according to plan. I ran 3x45k per week and then completed 35k in the recovery week. Boom. Delivered to the point. Unfortunately, after that one of those nasty childhood illnesses hit me and I started coughing during the recovery week. I went running anyway because I didn't feel too bad overall, my heart rate and health values were ok and sometimes a bit of moderate exercise helps.
Unfortunately not this time. The day after the last run, I had the feeling that I was going to get really sick and that's what happened. No fever or anything, but a slightly elevated resting heart rate, a bad cough and a feeling of weakness, so the second training block will be different. I don't know exactly how. It also depends on how quickly I feel fit again.
Are you into video?
As I mentioned before, I wanted to include video content here from time to time and that's what I'm doing today. To sum up the training plan a little and document how it went, this week I'm showing it in moving pictures. Over the last few months, I've gotten the impression that you're mainly served text here on Substack, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
Therapy Update
If there's anything worth mentioning about my therapy, I'll put it here. My therapist suggested to try out EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) last week. It still sounds a bit like magic to me, but I'm open to anything.
Housekeeping
35k. Recovery week, which was coming to the right time, but couldn’t avoid the illness kicking in. You can find all updates on my training plan here.
